The New York Yankees strike a deal with the American League East Division rival Boston Red Sox, acquiring outfielder Alex Verdugo. The Yankees send three pitchers to Boston in return: Greg Weissert, Richard Fitts, and Nicholas Justice.
New York has goals of beefing up their offensive, and this was the first step of many to get the off-season ball rolling amongst all the trade talks. Verdugo adds grit and aggressiveness to the Yankees lineup, with knowledge of the American League East and the arms employed in it.
Verdugo spent 2017-2019 in the National League with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and spent 2020-2023 with the Boston Red Sox. He was also a part of Team Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Verdugo slashed a .264/.324//421 this year with 54 RBIs, 13 home runs, on 144 hits. Verdugo brings an aggressive swing from the left-side, and is able to use all fields to his advantage and find holes in the green. He has above average power and will be able to take advantage of the short right-field porch in the Bronx.
Verdugo could be a key flip-piece prior to the off-season concluding. There is a strong chance that Verdugo could move in a trade towards Juan Soto. Meanwhile, he is currently here to help the Yankees lineup and outfield.
