The New York Yankees have been put in a hole early on in game three of the World Series. Right hander Clarke Schmidt got the ball on the mound for this match-up in the Bronx. The outing did not last long.
The Yankees righty took the mound today, owning a 3.86 ERA in 9 and 1 / 3 innings of work this postseason (excluding tonight). He’s allowed four earned-runs on nine hits with three walks, and six strikeouts. The two outings came against the Kansas City Royals and the Cleveland Guardians.
Yankees Starter's Outing Overview
Schmidt’s night ended prematurely, lasting only 2 and 2 / 3 innings. He allowed two hits, three earned runs, four walks, three strikeouts, and let up one home run. The first two runs came off of a home run off the bat of Freddie Freeman to right field.
Schmidt’s approach was off, and was confused by the hitters he faced. Freeman’s long-ball came off of a middle-zone cutter that lived in Freeman’s wheelhouse. Further to that, he walked Shohei Ohtani prior to this home run. He did not contest the slugger, although Ohtani’s demeanor showed protection of his injury. This led to part if the two run shot allowed.
His location was questionable and his zone was off. He threw 68 pitches with only 37 strikes. Schmidt worked 18 sweepers, 17 sinkers, 21 cutters, and 12 knuckle curves. 28 pitches he threw were in the strike zone, 40 were out of the zone. Batters hacked at 22 of his offerings.
Schmidt gained two groundouts and three flyout.s He recorded 15 called strikes, six swinging strikes, and seven strikes in play. Overall his short performance was weak against a tough Dodgers lineup.
