After the Blue Jays took a whopping 12-4 blowout on Friday against the Colorado Rockies, the team bounced back on Saturday to tie up the series and went on to play a day-game rubber match on Sunday,
The Blue Jays bats went up against the Rockies big-lefty Kyle Freeland. Freeland is a southpaw arm who usually is dependable with good stuff, however, 2024 has been a struggle for him. With a loss today, his record depreciates to 0-3 with a 13.21 ERA. Overall, Freeland did not look terrible, however the Blue Jays offense strung together runs over multi-base hits to score five runs.
Justin Turner went three for four with three RBIs on three hits. Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Isaih Kiner-Falefa also pushed an RBI each to equal the five runs. The Blue Jays didn’t utilize one single home run in this win.
The main key to today’s game was the man that kept the Rockies scoreless on a two-hitter. Jose Berrios was the man on the mound for the Blue Jays and on the opposite end of the scale as a pitcher. He has improved to 3-0 on the year after today’s win which followed seven strong innings of work only allowing two hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
Berrios worked the lineup strategically and most importantly, his pitch options worked even better. His command was electric and led to a 66% strike-rate. In 100 pitches, Berrios had 16 called strikes, 17 swinging strikes, 17 foul balls, and 14 in-play strikes. He forced 7 groundouts and 7 fly-outs. Berrios has been dialed in and truly displaying his elite-level capabilities.
